November 2007

Raylene Lowe, Symphony Orchestra Flute, won first place in the Central Illinois Youth Symphony Senior Concerto Competition! She will have the honor of
performing her winning piece, Frank Martin's "Ballade," with the orchestra in their Spring concert.

Emma Stewart, Debut Orchestra Flute, won first place in the Chicago Flute Club Annual Student Competition, Junior Division on November 11, 2007. Emma played Mozart's Concerto in C Major and selections from Faure's Fantasie for the final round competition.

Sam Battista, Symphony Orchestra Violin, won 1st place in 2007 Rockford Symphony Orchestra/Rock Valley College Concerto Competition.

Adele-Marie Buis, Symphony Orchestra Oboe, will perform the Vivaldi
Concerto in A Minor for Oboe with Bach and Beyond on December 2, 2007 at
the Dank Haus German Cultural Center, 4740 N. Western Ave. in Chicago.


October 2007

Raylene Lowe, Symphony Orchestra Flute, the West Suburban Symphony H.S.
Concerto Competition. She will be soloing with the West Suburban Symphony on December 2, 2007.


July 2007

Eric Windmeier, Symphony Orchestra bass, along with his friends Alec Watson and Ethan Parcell make up the jazz combo Sketches Trio, who performed at Taste of Chicago on Friday, July 6 at the Fox Chicago Bandstand.

Andrew T. Mariano, Symphony Orchestra piano, won the solo-piano competition sponsored by the Union League and Civic Arts Foundation on May 16 at Ganz Hall, Roosevelt University , Chicago .


April 2007

Zoë Hilbert, Symphony Orchestra oboe, was named as the Emerson Scholar for the State of Illinois  for the 2007 Interlochen Arts Camp.  The Emerson Scholar program is an audition-based competition that provides full tuition grants for 52 students from across the country to attend the high school division as instrumental music majors.


March 2007

Mira Luxion , Symphony Orchestra cello, was one of five 2007 recipients of the Farwell Award from the Musicians Club of Women. Mira will be awarded with a $1,700 scholarship.

Matthew Lipman, Symphony Orchestra viola, is the recipient of the Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award . Matthew will receive an award of $10,000 to help him continue his music studies and assist him with music-related needs. Matt also won first place at the Ohio Viola Society (High School Division) competition on March 3, 2007 .

Alex Liedke, Symphony Orchestra oboe, was the winner of the Merit School of Music Concerto Competition. George Samaan, Symphony Orchestra trombone, took an honorable mention for his performance of Gordon Jacob's Concerto for Trombone.

Michael Frigo, Symphony Orchestra cello, is a winner in the senior solo competition at Carl Sandburg High School and will be performing the first movement of the Schumann Cello Concerto in A minor on May 17th.


February 2007

Robin Kesselman, Symphony Orchestra bass, won first place in the Elmhurst Symphony Concerto Competition for young artists. He will play the 1 st movement of the Koussevitzky Bass Concerto with the orchestra on Saturday, May 12, 2007 . He also placed second in the senior division of the Glen Ellyn Musician's Club scholarship competition.

Scott Johnston, Concert Orchestra violin, was selected for the 2006/2007 Bach Double Violin Competition in Milwaukee , Wisconsin .  He is one of the students chosen to perform the Bach Concerto in D minor, with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra on March 6, 2007 .

Amir Gray, Symphony Orchestra tuba, participated in the ISSMA State Competitions winning two gold medals. 

The Cerebus Trio from the Symphony Orchestra (Ophelia & Kevin Hu and Mira Luxion ) is one of the co-winners for First Place in the Rembrandt Chamber Players' High School Chamber Music Competition. They will perform on the April 29 & 30 Rembrandt concerts and are the first to participate in the Rembrandt Young Artists Program. Also, the Mozart Trio (Ellie Green, Richard Li and Matt Lipman) was one of three Honorable Mentions and will also get to perform on Rembrandt's Family Concert.

Benjamin Lash, Symphony Orchestra Cello, won the Arthur D. Montzka Young Artists Concerto Competition. Benjamin, from Evanston Township High School will play solo pieces with the orchestra.

Brittney Walker, Symphony Orchestra Bassoon, was the dual first place winner in
DuPage Symphony Orchestra's (DSO) Youth Concerto Competition.  The
competition was held Saturday, February 10, 2007 .  Brittney will be DSO's
co-soloist at Pfeiffer Hall,  North Central College , 310 East Benton Ave.
in Naperville , IL on Saturday, March 17, 2007 at 8:00 p.m.   She'll perform
the first movement of J.N. Hummel's Bassoon Concerto with the full orchestra
accompanying her.  Brittney also competed in CSO's Youth Auditions for

Woodwinds, Brass, or Percussions and placed fourth.


January 2007

Andrew Mariano, Symphony Orchestra, placed first in an annual piano concerto Steinway Competition sponsored by The Beautiful Sound Chicago Piano Superstore at Downers Grove , Illinois . He will be performing his winning piece, Rachmaninoff‘s Piano Concerto No.2 with the Ars Viva Orchestra conducted by Maestro Alan Heatherington at the Skokie Performing Arts Center on May 6 and 7.

Matthew Wright, Symphony Orchestra Flute, is the winner of the 2007 CSO Youth Auditions for Woodwind, Brass, or Percussion . On Saturday, February 3rd, six young musicians competed on Armour stage in the Youth Audition Finals. As winner, Matthew will be performing as a soloist with the CSO 2007/08 Youth Concerts.

Zoë Hilbert, Symphony Orchestra Oboe, was one of the winners of the Oak Park & River Forest High School Concerto Competition. She will be playing the first movement of the Mozart Oboe Concerto with the high school's symphony orchestra on March 8th, 2007 . Zoë also received an honorable mention in the 2007 Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Youth Auditions and was the 2nd place winner in the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra's Stanger Young Artists Auditions. Zoë will be playing at an Elmhurst Kiwanis Club meeting later this spring. Finally, Zoë was selected as the principal oboe for the Honors Orchestra at the 2007 Illinois Music Educators Association All State Conference in Peoria , IL .

October 2006

Brittney Walker, CYSO bassoon, was the co-first place winner in Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) Youth Concerto Competition.  The competition was held Saturday, October 28, 2006. Brittney will be MYSO's featured soloist on Saturday, March 17, 2007 at Joliet Junior College Fine Arts Auditorium @ 4pm. in Joliet, IL.  She'll  perform all three movements of   J.N. Hummel's Bassoon Concerto with the full orchestra accompanying her.

The Jean and Dorthy Mollendorf Award for Musical Excellence Award

The Mollendorf Award is a $1,000 prize, given annually to a deserving CYSO graduating senior, to be applied to further musical study. It is given through an endowment fund bestowed to the CYSO by the late Jean Mollendorf, Founder and Past President of the CYSO Board of Directors.

 

The Bertha Schenker Award

The Bertha Schenker Award is designed to honor the memory of Bertha Schenker's lifelong love and support of music. The Schenker Award is a $1,000 prize open to anyone who has been a member of the CYSO for at least two consecutive years. The prize recognizes the well-rounded and engaged approach to music, academics, and community. The award is meant to be used to help keep music a creative and joyful part of the recipient's life. CYSO thanks Ben and Marianne Schenker, and the entire Schenker family, for their ongoing support of this annual prize.

Joshua Ramseyer, CYSO Trombone, recently performed the 3rd Movement ("Well Done") of Johan de Meij's T-Bone Concerto with the Pontiac Township High School Symphonic Band at their spring concert. Ramseyer was also chosen to receive the John Phillip Sousa Award for outstanding musicianship.


April 2006

Lucy Abrams, CYSO Clarinet, was selected as senior Soloist with the New Trier Wind Ensemble for their spring concert in Pick Staiger at Northwestern University, Evanston where she will perform Weber's Concertino on Wednesday, April 26, 2006. The concert will be webcast at www.nths.newtrier.k12.il.us

Richard Li, CYSO Clarinet, was selected into the Ninth Annual National Wind Ensemble for the Memorial Day concert at the Carnegie Hall under the direction of H. Robert Reynolds. Richard also won the Emerson Scholarship of the 2006 Interlochen Arts Camp for the State of Illinois.


March 2006

Summer Victoria Lusk, CYSO Violin, of Bloomington has been named winner of the Peoria Symphony Guild's Young Artist Competition with her performance of Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor. She will perform the Grieg concerto as guest soloist with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra at the three student concerts sponsored by the Guild on April 26 at the Civic Center Theater.

Sang-Joon Won, CYCO Clarinet, is the first place winner of the CYSO Concert Orchestra's 2005-2006 Concerto Competition on March 11, 2006. He performed Moz art 's Concerto in A major; and Second place winner, Carmen Abelson, CYCO Violin, performed Haydn's Concerto in G major. Both Sang-Joon and Carmen will be featured soloists with the CYCO in the 2006-07 season. Diane Chou, CYCO Cello, Alexander Hersh CYCO Cello, and Marisa Sheppard, CYCO Violin, all received honorable mention.

Emma Steele, CYSO Violin, won the annual CYSO Concerto Competition with her performance of the Alexander Glaznov Violin Concerto in A minor, op.82. Finalists were: Julia Coronelli (harp), Ben Lash (cello), Andrew Mariano (piano), and Ashley Sachay (violin).

Emma Steele, CYSO Violin, won first place at the Musicians Club of Women Scholarship Competition on March 18, 2006.

Masha Popova, CYCO Flute, won the American Opera Society Collins Scholarship on March 6, 2006. She is the co-principal of the CYSO Concert Orchestra.

Hanah Stu art, CYSO Violin, won the Blount-Slawson Young Artist national competition in Montgomery, AL. She will play the Korngold Violin Concerto with the Montgomery Symphony in April.


February 2006

Brittney Walker, CYSO Bassoon, placed first in the West Suburban Symphony Orchestra's Youth Concerto Competition performing the J.N. Hummel Bassoon Concerto. As a part of her prize Brittany will perform with the orchestra as West Suburban Orchestra's 2006 concerto soloist on April 9th at 4:00 pm. in LaGrange. She also placed third in the 2006 Elmhurst Youth Concerto Competition on February 4, 2006 and will perform at the Elmhurst Kiwanis Club on April 4, 2006.

Summer Lusk, CYSO Violin, is the winner of the Heartland Philharmonic 6th Annual Concerto Competition, held on January 21, 2006.

Ben Lash, CYSO Cello, is a semifinalist for the Stulberg International String Competition in Kalamazoo, MI.

Matthew Lipman, CYSO Violin, and Yoomin Ahn, CYSO Violin won the recent concerto competition held by the Southwest Symphony Orchestra. They performed with them on Feb 11th. (Matthew the Hoffmeister viola concerto in D major mvt.1, and Yoomin the Greig piano concerto in A minor, mvt.3)

Emma Steele, CYSO Violin, won was the Senior Open Division of The Walgreen Competition.

Hanah Stuart, CYSO Violin, and Kristen Predl, CYSO Flute, were selected as a finalist for the NFAA in Miami held in January, 2006.

Andrew Mariano, CYSO Violin, took both 1st and 2nd place at the Young Artists Competition with Rachmaninoff's piano concerto no.2 and Tchaikovsky's violin concerto. He will play on Feb 12th, 2006 at 3 p.m. accompanied by the Harper College Symphony Orchestra.

Julia Coronelli (CYSO harp)  was recently chosen as a finalist in the American Harp Society's 2005 National Competition in the Intermediate II Division. The final competition will take place at the University of Southern California In Los Angeles in June.

Julia Coronelli, CYSO Harp, was recently chosen as a finalist in the American Harp Society's 2005 National Competition in the Intermediate II Division. The final competition will take place at the University of Southern California In Los Angeles in June.

Matthew Klein, CYSO Trumpet, was accepted into the prestigious Tanglewood Institute's Young Artists Orchestra. Matt's summer experience at Tanglewood will include masterclasses, chamber music, and several concerts in the Ozawa Concert Hall and Koussevitzky Music Shed.

Thomas Huntington, CYSO Violin, received the 3rd place prize in the Indianapolis Young Artist Competition. The competition will broadcast on April 19th.


March 2005

Robert Sleeper, CYCO Bass, will be a member of his high school honors orchestra next season at Neuqua Valley High School. He recently received a Division I rating at the IHSA solo ensemble contest. In addition to his musical activities, Robert is currently working toward becoming an Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts.

Thomas Huntington, CYSO Violin, was the grand prize winner of the South Ben d Symphony's 2004-2005 Young Artist Competition. He performed Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in concert with the orchestra on March 5th.

Brittany Walker, CYSO Bassoon, competed in the Musiccoral 43rd Annual Scholarship Competition. She entered the high school instrumental division. There were two rounds and Brittney performed the Carl Jacobi Concertino Op. 7 in the prelims and was the only wind instrumentalist to advance to the finals round where she performed Flight of the Bumble Bee and won third place. She'll receive a scholarship prize which will be used towards furthering her music education. She chose to apply the money towards her trip to Europe this summer with the Encore Chamber Orchestra.

Brittney Walker, CYSO Bassoon, competed in the Elmhurst Youth Concerto Competition. Brittney performed the Carl Jacobi Concertino Op. 7 and placed 3rd. She is also scheduled to perform at either an Auxiliary or Kiwanis club function during the spring.


December 2004

Christia Bieda, CYSO Viola, and Chris Maxwell, CYSO Bass, were recently selected to participate in the National High School Honors Orchestra (NHSHO) in February, 2005. It is sponsored by the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) with the National School Orchestra Association. Based on a taped audition, each state submitted candidates. From this group a 120 piece orchestra was chosen which will perform for the 2005 Strings Alive National Conference in Reno, NV in late February.
