Listen to the Future! Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO) Announces U.S. Premiere Performance at Orchestra Hall with composer Mark-Anthony TurnageFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: As part of its 60 th Anniversary Season the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Music Director, Allen Tinkham, will perform the U.S. premiere of Lullaby for Hans by CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Mark-Anthony Turnage at Symphony Center, Orchestra Hall on Sunday, May 13, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will also feature conductor, Terrance Oliveras Gray and the Concert Orchestra performing Dmitri Shostakovich's Festive Overture. Composer Mark-Anthony Turnage will join the Symphony Orchestra on stage to speak about his composition, Lullaby for Hans, before the special performance. A composer of truly international stature, Mark-Anthony Turnage is among the most relevant communicators and creators of today. His orchestral and operatic music is often forthright and confrontational, unafraid to mirror the realities of modern life, yet its energy is exhilarating. Turnage states, “This piece started life as a little work for piano. I went to see Hans last year (2005) at his villa outside Rome and he was kind enough to mention he very much liked a string movement I had recently written. The music is very reflective and reminds me of wonderful days spent in his company over the many years I have known him.” With his flair for vivid titles, and his complete absorption of jazz elements into a contemporary classical style, Turnage produces work with a strong appeal to an enquiring, often young audience. The program also includes: Samuel Barber, Second Essay; Richard Strauss, Death and Transfiguration ; and Paul Hindemith, Symphonic Metamorphosis . The SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is a full 115-piece symphony orchestra composed of the top high school-age musicians in the Chicago metropolitan area selected by highly competitive auditions each spring.
