Message from Terrance Oliveras Gray, Associate Conductor
As you may already know, the Concert Orchestra will present the Chicago premiere performance of Mike McFerron's Heroic Overture on December 5, 2007 at the Chicago Cultural Center. This performance is a wonderful opportunity to "listen to the future" as our extremely talented young musicians take you through some wonderfully classic tales. I have very much enjoyed preparing this concert and I think you will find it a completely rewarding experience.
Mike McFerron's Heroic Overture #1 depicts the life of Cuchulainn, a heroic figure from Irish Gaelic folklore. As the piece opens one can sense a fog drenched forest in which something unknown is present. The long sustained notes in the low strings combined with a piccolo and bassoon duet create an eerie mood. The short opening section is followed by a more festive section that include an Irish jig-like tune interrupted by bold brass statements that harkens to the triumphant nature of the hero. You will notice the bodhran, a common Percussion instrument used in Gaelic music. The intensity of the middle section ebbs and flows until we finally return to the opening mood once again. The melody is dominated by the piccolo, but this time we have gorgeously painful chords in the strings that foretell the hero's death.
Mr. McFerron has found a way to mingle folk, romantic and modern ideas and create a wonderfully approachable and delightful piece of music. I hope you will join us for this wonderful performance, which also includes classics by Dragonetti, Haydn, and Tchaikovsky!
Sincerely,
Terrance
