Collaborations 2007-2008 Season
Dear Friends, As a part of the Chicago Arts community, CYSO has many opportunities to create one-of-a-kind performances and educational experiences. A large part of these opportunities are collaborations with local arts organizations, artists and venues that enrich the CYSO experience. This season collaborations at CYSO are front and center. From My Morning Jacket at Lollapalooza, to this spring's concert at Ravinia, we are thrilled to work with such distinguished artists and other close friends in our community. Collaborations this season include: John Cage's Musicircus (which you can enjoy this Sunday at the Chicago Cultural Center ), Masterclasses with the Pacifica Quartet and Dionne Jackson, as well as Tiempo Libre Rumba Sinfonica next spring at the Ravinia Festival. For more information s ee the comprehensive list below of collaborations. These connections are an important component of this great season, which promises to provide outstanding educational opportunities and exceptional performances. I hope to see you soon! Best, Holly H. Hudak

CYSO Alumni Jeff Holbrook
Jeff Holbrook It seems like just yesterday I was sitting awestruck in Orchestra Hall getting ready to play Pines of Rome in Maestro Tinkham's premiere concert. There I am, 6 short years later, getting a rare cultural and musical experience in Seoul, South Korea. Last summer, just one month after graduating with my Undergraduate degree from Juilliard, I moved to Korea to assume the Principal Trumpet position with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Korea's oldest and highest esteemed symphony orchestra. I feel very fortunate to be in a position where I can experience so many new things all at once. Not only am I immersed in much of the major orchestral literature, but also I am able to experience a new culture and way of life at the same time. The musical scene in Korea is one that is very different from that of the United States; most of our audience and orchestra members are from the younger generation. With so many of Korea's youth studying classical music, their love of the art shows with their support of local classical music institutions. I am always so encouraged to see the vibrant, new audience enjoying the music right along with the orchestra each and every week. Another benefit of the Seoul Phil is the opportunity to travel to places that not many American Orchestras get to visit. Not only do we tour all across South Korea, but also we have toured to such locations as Thailand, China and Japan, with a tour to New York planned next month. I am certain that my time in the CYSO helped me prepare for a job in the orchestra. It was at CYSO that I enjoyed the pleasure that came with performing with talented and professional-minded young musicians and was able to get a glimpse of what a career in the musical field would be like. I urge the current members of the CYSO to keep their minds open to new musical opportunities that may present themselves in the future, such as studying abroad or auditioning for orchestras overseas. As many may not know, all of our rehearsals in the Seoul Philharmonic are conducted in English giving foreign musicians the chance to participate. There are so many exciting things going on outside our borders and I encourage all of you to see what opportunities might appeal to you.
