Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras Newsletter

July 2006

Greetings from the CYSO!

Over the last year the CYSO received a substantial amount of acknowledgment, support and promotion from the American Symphony Orchestra League.

The American Symphony Orchestra League or “the League” as it is affectionately known, is a professional service organization which provides training, guidance and advocacy for over 900 American Orchestras. This year, at the League's national conference, the CYSO was represented in a number of ways. In the two days preceding the actual conference, a number of management courses were offered through their “Orchestra Leadership Academy” and for the first time, one specifically focused on the unique challenges associated with managing and leading a youth orchestra. Music Director Allen Tinkham, General Manager Joshua Simonds and I were asked to teach this two day course which was attended by over forty youth orchestra professionals from across the country.

During the course of those two days I also attended my first meetings as a member of the League's Youth Orchestra Division Board – a position I hold due to the esteem that the industry has for CYSO. Further, as we wrap up the 2005-2006 season, I realize that so much of this past season was devoted to the League's strategic vision initiative – a process that among ten American Orchestras, only one youth orchestra was selected to participate in and that was Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras.

As we continue to celebrate our national and international recognition we will next season be focused on the fabulous opportunity to increase the level of awareness of Chicago's premier youth orchestra right here at home as we celebrate our 60th Anniversary Season. We hope that you will join us and help in this endeavor by volunteering with the CYSO.

We will also be doing a number of concerts in exciting Chicagoland venues, in addition to our regular performances at Orchestra Hall. We will be performing at Ravinia on Sunday, August 20th, at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's “Day of Music” on Saturday, September 16th, and at the Chicago History Museum's grand re-opening on Sunday, October 1st. We look for you to tell your friends and family about your experience(s) with CYSO, invite them to attend our concerts and if you have been thinking about volunteering, now is the time to let us know!

For more information about volunteering, please contact Amanda Goedde at (312)939-2207 ext. 30. I look forward to seeing you all soon!

Happy summer!
