Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras Newsletter
May 2006
Greetings from the CYSO!
As we begin the month of May, we anticipate an exhilarating end to the current season while also planning for 2006-2007. Spring time is always very exciting at the CYSO as we gear up for our final concerts and hold auditions for ensembles for the next year.
On the subject of auditions, we'd like to thank the 450 young musicians who participated in auditions for next season. Our deep appreciation also extends to their silent partners: the parents who spend countless hours supporting the process of musical development. The thoughtful time spent seeking out the best teachers and musical experiences, scheduling lessons and rehearsals, providing transportation back and forth, attending musical events and cheering on their students in all kinds of “weather” provides a critical foundation for the growth of musical talent.
Musical talent will be in great abundance as we close the season with performances by the Symphony and Concert Orchestras at Orchestra Hall at 2:00 on Saturday afternoon, May 20th. We hope you are able to attend this outstanding program featuring works by Mussorgsky, Liszt, Bach and Shostakovich. All of our musicians and staff have worked extremely hard to make this a fabulous season, and the concert offers the opportunity to celebrate these endeavors. Congratulations to all involved!

Music Pathways
This season Music Pathways, our community engagement program, was again a huge success as we partnered with four Chicago Public Schools (CPS): Alexander Graham, Kinzie, Lafayette and Pulaski Fine Arts Academy.
Over the course of several weeks this spring, an ensemble from each of the instrument families – the three Principal Players ensembles composed of Concert Orchestra musicians – a string quartet, woodwind quartet and brass quintet – and the Symphony Orchestra's percussion ensemble visited each school. In these performances our young musicians demonstrated their instruments and taught various musical concepts. The program culminated on April 5th with 500 enthusiastic 3rd-5th grade students from participating schools taking a field trip to the South Shore Cultural Center to see all of the instrument families together in a performance of the Concert Orchestra. Once Music Pathways is completed each year, the CPS students come away with a greater understanding of music and, we hope, a greater desire to learn an instrument and attend concerts in the future.
“I learned the sounds that the instruments make. I learned the names too. I will never forget about the melody, harmony and rhythm. Now that's a lot of knowledge.” – A third grade student from Pulaski Fine Arts Academy
We are sincerely thankful for the outstanding support we received from the classroom teachers, music specialists, principals and students from each of the participating schools in addition to all of our musicians who performed and funders who make this program possible each year. Without their strong commitment to this work, the program could not be a success year after year.

Artistic Notes Dear Friends,
Each year at this time our Symphony Orchestra prepares to give what is not just a concert, but the culmination of an entire year of work. This year I have seen amazing growth in our ensembles resulting in: a constantly increasing composite skill, a higher level of artistry, and a more inspiring experience for our members and our audiences. For me this is the real beauty of an organization such as ours. It is why no matter how surprised you may be by the skills these young people exhibit you can be certain that the level is going nowhere but up.
As always, you can expect to enjoy playing of both sophistication and depth at Orchestra Hall on May 20 as both the Concert Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra perform. You'll hear music made with the ferocity of a Chicago winter and with the delicacy of a single snowflake. You will see well over 100 of the most talented and dedicated young people in the region devour some of the greatest work of western art. And while each spring I am saddened by the coming of season's end and the graduation of so many of our wonderfully talented members, I am inspired anew by the future stars I've heard in our record breaking 450 auditions for the 2006-2007 season...those still unknown to you, our audience. It's like a secret I can't wait to tell.
...and just wait ‘till next year
