The CYSO Concert Orchestra will be performing the world premiere of D.J. Sparr's Larghetto cum Loco at the Chicago Cultural Center on Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of conductor Terrance Oliveras Gray. Larghetto cum Loco , completed in August 2006, was written for the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras Concert Orchestra and features a combination of baroque form with modern orchestration techniques and harmonies. Composer D.J. Sparr states, “I hope to have provided the young musicians of CYCO with a piece that they would enjoy and an experience working with a living composer that will endear them to perform premieres for the rest of their lives.” Also included on the program are the CYSO 2006 Concert Orchestra Concerto Competition Winners Sang-Joon Won, clarinet and Carmen Abelson, violin.

Soloist Sang-Joon Won will be performing the first movement of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, K.622, A Major. A native of Seoul, Korea he is a participant in a high school foreign exchange program and will complete his senior year at the Latin School of Chicago this May. He has been playing clarinet since age ten.

Carmen Abelson is the soloist for Haydn's Violin Concerto, Hob. VIIa:4, G major. Carmen is a sophomore at Northside College Preparatory High School in Chicago, where she runs varsity cross-country and track. Miss Abelson has been playing violin since age five, and has been performing with CYCO since age eight. She has participated in Music Pathways, CYSO's education engagement program, and is currently in the Principal Players string quartet.

Led by Associate Conductor Terrance Oliveras Gray, the CONCERT ORCHESTRA is a 90+ member full-orchestra which provides students with a high- level introduction to advanced orchestral playing. The schedule includes weekly rehearsals, sectionals, a concerto competition, and several concerts at major venues like University of Chicago's Mandel Hall and the Chicago Cultural Center. The Concert Orchestra participates in the Civic Orchestra's innovative mentoring program, MusiCorps which includes several visits by Civic Orchestra members who coach sectionals and sit in on full rehearsals.
