True to its tradition of excellence and innovation, the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra will present the World Premiere of Jonathan Newman 's Metropolitan at Symphony Center 's Orchestra Hall, Sunday, November 13, 2005 at 7:30 p.m.
Led by Music Director Allen Tinkham, this internationally recognized orchestra is composed of the most advanced high school-age musicians in the greater Chicagoland area.
Describing Metropolitan as “ a raucous celebration of stylistic variety, where all my musical religions converge,” composer Jonathan Newman noted the piece's evolution from “chic pop-inspired harmonies and pulses with the sheen of a ‘downtown' aesthetic” to a composition characterized by his “simply working with the musical elements involved: stuttering mixed-meters, layered grooves inspired by American minimalism, three-against-four cross- rhythms, stretched-out harmonic rhythm, and a single, compact melodic cell.”
In addition to Newman's Metropolitan, the program will also feature: Smetana: “Vltava” (The Moldau) from Má vlast , Sibelius: Symphony No.5, Op.82, E-flat major and Bartók: Concerto for Viola, with soloist Yoshihiko Nakano , winner of the 2005 CYSO concerto competition held last spring.
Symphony Center 's Orchestra Hall is located at 220 South Michigan Avenue , Chicago.
