Symphony Orchestra Fall Orchestra Hall Concert
Sunday, November 12, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. As part of its 60th Anniversary Season the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Music Director, Allen Tinkham, will feature an exciting work by contemporary composer Michael Daugherty, and Johannes Brahms Symphony No.1. Also featured on the program is Emma Steele, Symphony Orchestra 2006 Concert Competition winner performing Alexander Glazunov's Concerto for Violin, op.82, A major.
Composer Michael Daugherty will join the Symphony Orchestra on stage to speak about his composition, Route 66 , before the special performance. When describing the piece, Mr. Daugherty says: “ Route 66 is a musical reflection on America, as seen through my rear view mirror. Warning--objects in mirror are closer than they appear.” Michael Daugherty came to international attention when his Metropolis Symphony (1988-93), a tribute to the Superman comics, was performed in 1995 at Carnegie Hall by conductor David Zinman and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and subsequently recorded for Argo/Decca. Other large orchestral works include UFO (1999), a percussion concerto commissioned and premiered by Evelyn Glennie and the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin, and Fire and Blood (2003), a violin concerto commissioned and premiered by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra conducted by Neeme Järvi.
