Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra to Tour Europe

For Immediate Release
May 24, 2005

On June 16 th , the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO) will embark on a ten-day, four-concert international tour, showcasing its Encore Chamber Orchestra in Budapest, Vienna, and Prague.

The trip, CYSO's first international tour in seven years, features thirty-eight teenage musicians, ranging in age from 13-18, performing under CYSO Music Director Allen Tinkham. “Touring is a totally unique environment, and there are so many benefits,” says Tinkham. “There are the purely artistic aspects in preparation: working to perform a piece better, becoming more adept at realizing the musical ideas. Then going on the tour itself, which is the time to take the performances to an even higher level.”

The orchestra will be playing a well-known and well-loved repertoire, in cities where the composers wrote and lived. Works to be presented include Rossini's Barber of Seville overture, Schubert's Symphony No. 8, Bartók's Rumanian Folk Dances, Haydn's Symphony No. 104, Barber's Adagio for Strings, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 7.

The venues slated for the CYSO concerts are among the finest in the world. In Budapest, the orchestra was originally set to play in one of the smaller halls, but because of strong ticket sales, the concert was moved to the new National Philharmonic Hall, acoustically-designed by Russell Johnson.

CYSO Executive Director, Holly Hudak views the tour as an extraordinary opportunity for the musicians “to achieve the musical and personal growth that comes as a result of this kind of experience. It is my hope the tour will be an experience they cherish for years to come.”
