Listen to the Future! If Music be the Food of Love…Play On!Annual Gala Raises $100,000 for CYSOFebruary 21, 2005 – The Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO) welcomed a sold out crowd of more than 300 guests to its 2005 gala If Music be the Food of Love…Play On! on Saturday, February 12 th , at The Drake Hotel. With Phil Ponce of WTTW's ArtBeat Chicago and Chicago Tonight serving as the evening's emcee, the event's festivities included both a silent and live auction and raised over $100,000 to benefit the CYSO. The annual fundraiser featured a musical program showcasing the entire 115 piece Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra that performed romantic favorites, including select pieces from West Side Story and Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet . The orchestra, conducted by Allen Tinkham , CYSO Music Director, was joined by special guest soloist cellist Abraham Feder, a CYSO alumnus and Curtis Institute of Music student. As winner of a 2004 gala auction prize to lead the orchestra, Albert Pick, III guest-conducted the CYSO in Wagner's Lohengrin: Prelude, Act III , to a most enthusiastic reception from guests in attendance. The Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Music Director Allen Tinkham , is a full symphony orchestra composed of the top high school-age musicians in the Chicagoland area selected by highly competitive annual auditions each spring. Named the “2004 Youth Orchestra of the Year” by the Illinois Council of Orchestras, the CYSO, now in its 58 th season, has achieved international renown for its excellence and innovation and has gained a reputation for producing the next generation of professional musicians. Other upcoming CYSO concerts include its Encore Spring Concert featuring works of Rossini, Beethoven, and Shostakovich on March 26 th and two concerts at Governors State University on April 10 th . On April 30 th , the CYSO will share the stage with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for the CSO Family Concerts.
