As part of its 60 th Anniversary Season the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Music Director, Allen Tinkham, will be performing at Symphony Center, Orchestra Hall on Sunday, November 12, 2006 at 7:30 pm, featuring an exciting work by contemporary composer Michael Daugherty, and classics by Johannes Brahms and Alexander Glazunov.

Composer Michael Daugherty will join the Symphony Orchestra on stage to speak about his composition, Route 66, before the special performance. When describing the piece, Mr. Daugherty says: “Route 66 is a musical reflection on America , as seen through my rear view mirror. Warning--objects in mirror are closer than they appear.” Michael Daugherty came to international attention when his Metropolis Symphony (1988-93), a tribute to the Superman comics, was performed in 1995 at Carnegie Hall by conductor David Zinman and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and subsequently recorded for Argo/Decca. Other large orchestral works include UFO (1999), a percussion concerto commissioned and premiered by Evelyn Glennie and the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin, and Fire and Blood (2003), a violin concerto commissioned and premiered by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra conducted by Neeme Järvi.

Also featured on the program is Emma Steele, Symphony Orchestra 2006 Concert Competition winner performing Alexander Glazunov's Concerto for Violin, op.82, A major. Emma Steele is co-concertmaster of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and concertmaster of the Encore Chamber Orchestra. She has also won first place awards in the Midwest Young Artists Walgreens Competition, Society of American Musicians competitions, and the Chinese Fine Arts Society Music Festival. She has received scholarship awards from the Musicians Club of Women and the Union League Civic and Arts Foundation.

Emma is featured in the recently-released PBS documentary special Circling Around: The Violin Virtuosi . She has performed on Public Radio International's program From the Top , Chicago's classical radio station WFMT, the Skokie Steinway Series, the Taste of Chicago Comcast Stage, and at City Hall for Mayor Daley.
