Starting as a “Prep String” musician, I played for a conductor and with so many other string musicians for the first time. Here, I learned the importance of not only paying attention to my own playing, but listening to other musicians to produce a more “together” sound… to “make music”. As a member of Debut Orchestra, the required repertoire was more challenging, so it pushed me to work harder with my studies. My technical skills developed and I grew artistically. Last season, one of the best experiences I had was being one of the Principal 2nd violinists. I had the responsibility to lead others, which I look forward to developing. This season I auditioned for the next level orchestra, Concert Orchestra, and made it. I will be working harder then ever before, but I know because of CYSO’s program I will have a strong orchestra foundation.
Over the last three years, I’ve auditioned for each orchestra level and seasonal seating. These many audition experiences have taught me that hard work is required. For success, I take extra private lessons to learn the new music. “Polishing” the pieces can be difficult. It takes lots and lots of “smart” practicing time. At the auditions, I’ve learned that when I’m nervous, I tend to mess-up. Knowing I’ve prepared, I work to stay calm and confident. Whatever happens in the end, I know I have tried my best.
I’ve enjoyed playing orchestral music. It’s different then my other studies. My conductor, Mr. Gray, has a contagious energy that encourages me to play with my heart. The opportunity to attend masterclasses is great, because you learn new ways to play the orchestra music. And, it’s fun to be with friends that have the same interests and dreams as me. Each step of the way, I’ve grown so much. I am lucky to play with CYSO!
