Just like we shed our coats, music performances shed the
walls of a formal concert hall with the arrival of summer. What is it about
being outside that makes everything better? Around Chicago there are so many
opportunities to take in outdoor concerts – everything from Lollapalooza (at
which CYSO will be performing with Dan Zanes on the Kidzapalooza stage!) to
the Grant Park Music Festival and Ravinia.
The great bonus of outdoor classical concerts in the city
is all that great music has a chance to be heard by a broader audience. People
just walking down the street get to hear Beethoven, Debussy, or Stravinsky.
Perhaps the ultimate in outdoor music is Play Me I’m Yours,
an interactive piece of art by Luke Jerram of Great Britain. In various cities
around the world, pianos are placed on street corners, or tucked away between
buildings, and anyone passing by may sit down and play for as long, or as
short, as they want. Suddenly the line
between performer and audience gets totally blurred. People just passing by
actually become the concert. It gives the idea of accessibility in arts a whole
new spin, don’t you think?
