Is there anything better than a warm sunny day? How about a
warm sunny day where 750 Chicago Public School students get to learn about
instruments and hear wonderful orchestral music performed by CYSO’s own Debut
Orchestra at the Chicago Cultural Center?
Thanks to The International Music Foundation working in
conjunction with us, that’s exactly what happened this past Friday morning at
our Education Concert.

Check out this awesome and energetic performance of
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. I think they define the phrase, “play it like you
mean it.”

I’m
a pianist (and harpsichordist...harpsichord is so hard core, I love it) and
have a couple of degrees in music history. Therefore, I feel it’s my pianist/musicological
duty to inform all of you fabulous people in the Wonderful-World-Of-Orchestral-Music that it's time for all us
pianists to get all up in the concert hall with "Chopin Year" to
celebrate the 200 years since Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin was born in Żelazowa Wola,
Poland, 1810.

How would you listen differently if you felt the sound? Evelyn Glennie is a percussionist who happens to have severely impaired hearing. So,
in order to “listen” she actually “feels” the sound through the vibrations of
the rhythms. Much like how we hear the vibration of the heart beating, she
“hears” the music through feeling the vibrations through her hands, arms, and
feet – her whole body. “Use your body as a resonating chamber.”

Hi! I’m
Kathryn, an Operations Assistant here at Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras, and
I’d like to welcome you to the new CYSO blog!
As you
can see, it’s been a little while since our last update, but that doesn’t mean
we’ve just been sitting around sight reading through Beethoven (even though
that’s a great way to spend some
time). We’ve been up to some awesome stuff and every week I’ll keep you up to
speed, so keep coming back to hang out with us here at cyso.org.
What
will you see ...

We began the day with a bus tour of Montevideo and discovered how beautiful the city along the water really is. We rode along the “rambla,” which describes any road along the water. It certainly reminded us of home and Lake Shore Drive (except Chicago needs a few palm trees). We learned that Montevideo has over 400 statues and monuments. During the tour, we stopped to view some of these important historical sites and enjoyed the view of the city from the coast. After lunch and shopping in the Old City of Montevideo this afternoon, we had a great farewell dinner. The kids then celebrated at the hotel in a ballroom with music, snacks and dancing. It was a great way to celebrate their musical achievements and a fantastic South American tour!
Here are some more thoughts from our students on their favorite parts of this tour.
“What a fantastic culture we are in. The old buildings, the dancing, the food, the music! But the more I think about how much fu ...
