In the 12/14/08 Dayton Daily News (Ohio), Carol Simmons profiled Jessica Hung, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra’s new concertmaster. “With the announcement this fall that Hung would become the Dayton Philharmonic’s new concertmaster, she not only moved into a position generally held by men, but she also became the youngest person to assume the lead player role in the Dayton organization. At 22 years of age, she’s unexpectedly having to complete her graduate studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music via long-distance.” Hung followed a typical path to a music career, playing in the CYSO Concert Orchestra and studying at such festivals as the Schleswig-Holstein Orchestral Academy, New York String Orchestra Seminar, and Tanglewood Music Center before moving on to the Cleveland Institute of Music. Simmons notes that “a personal playing characteristic” for which Hung had “been chided by teachers in the past is actually helpful as a concertmaster. ‘I tend to move my body a lot,’ she says. That movement, which some teachers found distracting, enables her to lead in a more physical way.”
